Dear Friend,

I remember walking through one of the local department stores recently and was surprised by the beautiful aroma of garlic in the distance. Of course, I followed my nose. To my delight, the "chef" was serving up a dish of sauted mushrooms with garlic to demonstrate some cookware. How delicious it was! It was so easy, and the choice of mushrooms with garlic is also noteworthy as "Power Foods." Please enjoy this edition of my newsletter which will have information on some of the power foods, and other tid bits about food you might like to know.

Power Foods

"Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food," are words credited to Hippocrates, the father of medicine, from more than 400 years B.C. Today this may be true more than ever if we consider what foods we commonly eat. Are they really the best for us? Which foods should we choose? Though it's hard to always buy organic fruits and vegetables, cook a meal at home from scratch, or grow your own in a garden out the back door, there are some easy ways to have good nutrition and some great foods which pack a punch to offer the best nutrition for you. Let's have a look at some of these Power Foods. Click each link for more information:

Acai berry is one of the most nutritious fruits in the world, rich in B and C vitamins, essential fatty acids, minerals, protein, antioxidants and anthocyanins.

Gogi berry contains 19 amino acids, 21 trace minerals, a complete spectrum of antioxidant carotinoids and is one of the most concentrated sources of beta-carotene, calcium and vitamin C in the entire plant world.

Green Tea used in China for more than 5000 years to promote health and well-being helps support the cardiovascular and immune systems, fight free radical damage and slow the effects of oxidative stress.

Red Korean Ginseng helps increase alertness and concentration, support memory and promote energy, stamina and endurance naturally.

Maitake Mushroom, rich in minerals, vitamins and amino acids, help support immune system function.

 Entrees Made Easy

Eating Healthy-Stress Free

How can you eat healthy, spend more time with your family and cut down on stress all at the same time?  Consumers are finding out at meal assembly stores across the nation.

The concept is simple. The store takes care of all the shopping, slicing, dicing and cleaning. Customers just assemble the provided recipes. Everything is arranged for maximum efficiency.    Customers who don't have time to assemble meals can also buy them fresh or frozen and ready to go.  Store owners estimate homemakers save over 20 hours a month in prep, cooking, and cleaning time.

Getting the family to sit together for dinner is hard. One key reason: how little time we have to fix healthy, tasty meals.  According to a 2005 national survey more than 70 percent of parents experience some type of stress associated with dinnertime.  Hectic schedules can barely leave enough time to eat, let alone cook, yet studies show that children who eat with family have healthier diets and are more likely to report high grades, become National Merit Scholars and avoid substance abuse.   Meal assembly stores have the answer for busy families.

The ingredients are fresh, without preservatives. "I really like knowing exactly what goes into each meal," said Melissa Shelton, a customer who buys 6 to 12 meals monthly at Entrees Made Easy in Hillsboro.  The business' website provides all the nutritional information, so consumers know exactly what they're getting.  Store staff can also help tailor meals to dietary needs, such as diabetic diets and food allergies, even providing substitutes in some cases.

For some, the best kind of comfort food comes from simply knowing the answer to that nagging question -- what's for dinner tonight?

Nutrition Talk - Chocolate and Red Wine, Two Great Reasons to Indulge

If you're looking for a reason to indulge in chocolate and red wine you may want to read this article from my favorite store, New Seasons Market. Adding antioxidants and flavinoids from chocolate can promote cardiovascular health. Antioxidants, like resveratrol found in red wine, have been shown to reduce production of LDL (bad cholesterol), boost HDL (good cholesterol) and reduce blood clotting. They may also favorably influence lipid profiles following a meal.
