Anti-Freeze in Your Shampoo, Lotion, Toothpaste and Deodorant?
Anti-Freeze in Your Pantry?
Anti-Freeze In Your Cosmetics
Run, don't walk, to check the labels on your shampoos, lotions, toothpaste, deodorants and cosmetics. As you check out the shampoo label you might read wonderful ingredients such as essential oils, all natural and very nice to smell. Ok. Look a little further. Do you see propylene glycol? This chemical is commonly added to products as a humectant, an ingredient that will keep products moist. You might be surprised to learn that propylene glycol is the main ingredient in anti-freeze. (please note, I have no intention of singling out the anti-freeze product represented here. We're just talking about ingredients in general.)
antifreeze

Prestone® Low Tox Antifreeze Specifications
Composition by Weight
Propylene Glycol                      95.2%
Soluble Inhibitors (Anhydrous)     1.8%
Total Water                                3.0%
Dyes and Defoamer                   Trace

By the way, the Low Tox you see here is an effort by the company to make anti-freeze less tasty than it's ethylene glycol counterpart to pets and kids who might like to lap it up. Pets and children who ingest anti-freeze become very ill and may die! Is propylene glycol any safer? Not really. It just doesn't taste as good. So the question is, does it really need to be in our self-care products? Might small amounts that we become exposed to every day accumulate in our bodies? Might there be a long term effect from exposure? Could this be one of the reasons why the cancer rate is so high? Hmmm... Questions to think about.

Anti-Freeze In Your Pantry
Now have a look at some of the foods in your pantry. Propylene glycol, also called propanediol, is a common ingredient in shredded coconut as well as soft pet foods.

Read this from the DOW corporation
:
"Humectant and stabilizer (in prepared fruits, vegetables and bakery goods)
Solvent in flavor solutions and extractions (and in food additives, such as colors, antioxidants, enzymes and emulsifiers)
Plasticizer and softening agent for items such as cork seals
It also has the following uses:
Heat transfer fluids for food and beverage chilling and freezing applications
Solvent for printing inks used in food packaging
Equipment cleaner, to remove contamination from food processing equipment"

What could this mean for us if we continue to use products containing propylene glycol?
"Implicated in contact dermatitis, kidney damage and liver abnormalities; can inhabit skin cell growth in human tests and can damage cell membranes causing rashes, dry skin and surface damage."
-- Material Safety Data Sheets(MSDS)

"A published clinical review showed propylene glycol causes a significant number of reactions and was primary irritant to the skin even in low levels of concentrations."
- The American Academy of Dermatologists, inc.; Jan. '91
ACUTE EFFECTS:
"May be harmful by inhalation, ingestion or skin absorption.
May cause eye irritation, skin irritation.
Exposure can cause gastro-intestenal disturbances, nausea, headache and vomiting, central nervous system depression."
-- Material Safety Data Sheets(MSDS)

What can you do about it?

While bureaucracy slows the process of making products safe, personal decisions for your family can have an immediate benefit.

1.  Read the label. If the product comes with a warning, there's probably a good reason for it.
2.  Look for products that are natural and organic. If you can't pronounce the ingredients, they might not be good for you.
3.  If you wouldn't eat it, don't put it on your skin. The skin is the largest organ in the body and readily absorbs what you put on it... including what's in the water you bathe in, the laundry detergent you washed your clothes in, the air around you and the lotions you use. More on that another time!
4. If you wouldn't eat it yourself, or use it on yourself, DON'T give it to your dog! Please! Our kids and pets are even more sensitive than we are.
Aluminum and Alzheimer's
What happens when the third most common element in the environment is used in products ranging from fabric dyes and cookware to deodorant, toothpaste and fuel?

aluminuminproducts

"There is a suspected link between Alzheimer's disease and the toxicity of aluminum... autopsies have found high concentrations of the metal in the brain of people who had suffered from this disease." Public Health Reports Nov-Dec 1993
"The evidence is strong enough that the prudent person will eliminate all food and cosmetic sources of aluminum..." Gary Price Todd, M.D., author of Nutition, Health and Disease

"Symptoms of aluminum toxicity include memory loss, learning difficulty, loss of coordination, disorientation, mental confusion, colic, heartburn, flatulence, and headaches."
Life Extension Foundation (2006)

What can you do about it in your home?
* Take shorter showers to avoid inhaling vapors with aluminum and use a filter on your shower that filters aluminum.
* Use personal care products that don't contain aluminum.
* Use sea salt instead of regular table salt, avoid baking soda and other leavening agents with aluminum.
* Avoid boxed and frozen foods that may contain maltol, a flavor enhancer. This ingredient  combines with aluminum in the digestive tract to form aluminum maltolate, a compound that can cross the blood/brain barrier to transport aluminum into the brain. Moreover, aluminum maltolate causes oxidative stress in the brain and death in neuronal cells.
* Eat fresh fruits and vegetables and real cheese instead of processed foods.
* Avoid using aluminum cookware, foil and cans.
* Supplement with anti-oxidants to reduce free radical cellular damage. Liquid activated zeolite is your best solution to not only act as a powerful anti-oxidant, but it also traps and removes heavy metals from your body.
