Dear Friend,

More than half of premature deaths among men are preventable.

What's more is, many men still aren't taking preventive measures. Educating men, their families, and health care providers about the importance of early detection of male health issues (i.e. cardiovascular, mental, prostate health, osteoporosis, and other pertinent health issues) is crucial in the effort to reduce health-related mortality rates.

Rosemary and GracieLadies,
while this health crisis is of particular concern to men, it is a concern for you too, regarding your fathers, husbands, sons, and
brothers. By educating yourself about potential male health problems and passing that information on to the men you love, you may be able to save a life. And by encouraging the men in your life to realize that even the smallest symptoms can sometimes be serious and may need to be discussed with their doctors, you'll be helping them take a more active role in their own health care.

What can you do? Read on to learn, share, make some changes, and take this message to heart.

Prostate Health

Prostatitis does not lead to cancer, but it's painful, extremely inconvenient and sometimeBroccolis difficult to cure. Here are some helpful prevention tips:

· Eat risk
-
reducing foods. Add plenty of tomato, soy, cruciferous vegetables (such as broccoli, kale, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts), and fish to your meals.

· Supplement with selenium. Take 200 mcg a day of this trace mineral to decrease your risks for developing the disease.

· Drink lots of water to help flush out your bladder. Urine should be almost clear.

· Natural therapies such as saw palmetto and pygeum are frequently recommended and are effective helping to alleviate the symptoms of testosterone breakdown products on prostate cells.

· See your health care professional once a year for a prostate exam, to help detect dise
ase before it becomes advanced
Little Signs That Mean a Lot

We sometimes take our heart for granted ... all that beating, day after day! Aside from the dramatic heart attack with the squeezing chest pain, rose heart what are the little signs that we should watch for that could indicate a weakened heart, or "heart failure"? According to the American Heart Association, the first symptom of heart failure can be fatigue.

Watch for:
- Sudden weight gain - three or more pounds in one day, five or more pounds in one week
- Shortness of breath while at rest, not related to exercise or exertion
Increased swelling of the lower limbs (legs or ankles)
- Swelling or pain in the abdomen
- Trouble sleeping (awakening short of breath, using more pillows)
- Frequent dry, hacking cough
- Loss of appetite
- Increased fatigue or feeling tired all the time

"As the condition gets worse, there can be shortness of breath and wheezing during exertion, and eventually also when you are resting. As fluid accumulates in the lungs, people with heart failure may begin to sleep propped up with pillows to make breathing easier. Fluid also can collect in the legs and ankles, causing swelling. In people who are less active, collected fluid can accumulate in the middle of the body. Some people need to urinate several times during the night as the kidneys drain off some of the excess fluid that accumulates in the lower body during the day. As the body accumulates more and more fluid, the person may notice significant weight gain. There also can be a chronic cough due to fluid accumulation in the lungs.'

"Although heart failure usually affects both sides of the heart, in some people it affects only the left or right side. In these cases, symptoms vary depending on which side is affected. When heart failure affects mainly the left side of the heart, the symptoms are more likely to involve breathing difficulties. When mainly the right side is affected, the main symptoms may be leg swelling and abdominal swelling."

Too much LDL in your bloodstream is what leads to atherosclerosis, the buildup
of plaque in the walls of your arteries. HDL actually works to clear cholesterol from the blood and return it to the liver, where it can be eliminated from the body. Triglycerides, like cholesterol, are another fat in our bloodstream,
and research is now showing that high levels of triglycerides are
also linked to heart disease.
High cholesterol itself does not cause any symptoms; so many people are unaware that their cholesterol levels are too high. Know YOUR numbers and take steps toward prevention.
