| How Much is Enough? |
|
Nutrition. We all need it and we hope to get 100% of the good nutrition we consume. Are we? As our kids get ready for school we hope that the breakfast they have is enough and that the lunch they bring to school or purchase is enough.
Is it enough?
Here is an excerpt from an exciting new book, Vitamin Myth Exposed By: Brian Clement, Ph.D., N.M.D.
"VITA means life. Vita defines the difference between synthetic and what is now known as naturally occurring. This book is about the consequences of this difference in our vitamins and nutritional supplements today, and is further dedicated to helping you understand their impact on your health and how you can become equipped to avoid unhealthful choices and benefit from healthy whole-food choices (N.O.S. - Naturally Occurring Standard - varieties).
"The best vitamin supplements are those with labeled potencies derived from naturally-occurring, full-spectrum food extracts.
"Another primary difference between real full-spectrum whole-food vitamins and synthetic vitamins is that real vitamins contain the essential trace minerals necessary for the vitamins' synergistic operation."

Are Your Kids Healthy and Ready For School? |
September, 2007 |
Dear Friend
Aside from new clothes and school supplies, are your kids ready to return to school to learn? How can we, as parents, contribute to their success?
When I was a classroom teacher, I always hoped that students would come to class prepared and ready to think. That meant more than just having the homework finished.
Today's students are even more challenged. Many children are on medications for asthma, ADD/ADHD, as well as other health and behavioral issues. Busy schedules and other challenges add to stress.
Let's take a look at a few important topics for our children's wellness as successful students and vital human beings.
* Vaccinations and Toxins
* Clear Thinking, Problem Solving and Focus
* Nutrition
* Sleep
The following articles are the first in a mini-series focused on children's health. Some solutions are highlighted and connect you to articles and resources I believe you will find useful for a successful and healthy year.

Does Your Child Have Full Learning Potential? Vaccinations, The Environment and Toxins |
|
The Organic Consumers Association's "Appetite for Change" campaign is focused on implementing policies and practices that can one day provide a safe environment for our children.
"Children are more vulnerable to toxic harm than adults because they are smaller, consume more air, food, and water for each pound of body weight than adults, and they put more things into their mouths.
Accordingly, children are more susceptible to damage from environmental threats because their bodies, brains, organs, and central nervous system are undergoing extensive growth and development throughout infancy and early childhood."
Where are these toxins coming from? a short list...
- Grocery store produce as well as processed foods with pesticide residues
- Processed foods, like baby foods, canned foods, foods packaged in plastics
- Areas located near agricultural communities using pesticides... where is your child's school located?
- Vaccinations containing heavy metal preservatives such as mercury and aluminum Read Mercury's Costly Links to Autism
- Unfiltered tap water and all drinks in plastic bottles
- Toys, arts and crafts materials such as glue, markers, crayons made outside the USA and plastic clay, plastic wrap and packaging, especially those containing PVC
- Body care products, shampoos, deodorant, nail polish, lotions, gels, etc. that contain phthalates, propylene glycol and heavy metals
What do these toxins do?
- Organophosphate pesticide (op) exposure is linked to hyperactivity, behavior disorders, learning disabilities, developmental delays and motor dysfunction
- Heavy metals are associated with neurological and kidney damage and more. Heavy metals take the place of calcium in bones, oxygen on hemoglobin, and more. Mercury is especially high in children with autism.
- Phthalates may interfere with endocrine function and reproductive development

What are the solutions?
- Become aware and make choices that are right for your family. Choose organic foods, minimally processed, as often as you can
- Reduce your intake of processed foods, packaged in plastics and cans whenever possible. Read the labels. Look for alternative packaging like wax paper and glass. Don't heat or store foods in plastic.
- See more solutions on the RESOURCES page of my website.
- Act now to REMOVE THE TOXINS

| What's on your mind? |
We have all experienced at one time or another the effects of getting a song stuck in our heads, or the worry and stress that come with day-to-day challenges. What happens to all the "good thoughts" when there is so much clutter in the way? How can anyone focus on a calculation or an idea when their thoughts are in "instant replays"?
Clear the clutter. Guided meditation is a relaxing technique designed to clear the mind of daily "noise" in our lives. This is a wonderful method for people of all ages and can bring about clarity, relaxation and feelings of rejuvenation. Click here or below to find a link to a FREE Guided Meditation download.

| Enough Sleep? or Quality Sleep? |
The Search for Quality Sleep
A person can go to bed expecting to fall asleep and instead just toss and turn having a restless night. A night or two of sleep like that can wear anyone down, interfere with their focus throughout the day, decision making skills and problem solving as well as general health and immune function. College students who participated in sleep studies where they were deprived of sleep for extended periods of time began to show signs of aging, experiencing symptoms of illness more commonly associated with older people. Obesity, asthma, diabetes and other chronic diseases are increasing at an alarming rate in children.
"Research shows children with sleep disturbances have more medical problems- such as allergies, ear infections, and hearing problems. They are also more likely to have social and emotional problems.
Sleep deprivation can, in fact, undermine all areas of physical and mental health."
