Natural and Safe Gifts for everyone you love... and a few important cautions.

When it comes to selecting gifts I have a few recommendations, and words of caution that may not be what you normally read. We see that foods are labeled with what's inside, but are the toys and gifts we buy labeled with as much caution? The soft toys that children and pets put in their mouths are made with plastics that may be toxic and may cause long lasting harm. Some wonderful gifts like wooden toys, very durable, colorful and stimulating for the imagination are painted with lead based paints. So, here are just a few guidelines to keep in mind:

1. Check the Consumer Product Safety Commission's website to see which toys, games, gardening tools, jewelry and artist gift sets have been recalled. Most recalls involve excessive lead paint. You may have picked up a home test kit for lead, but the CPSC announced that these kits were inadequate to evaluate consumer products for lead.

2. Phthalates are everywhere, not just in toys. This ingredient commonly added to plastic to make it soft and flexible is also found in shower curtains, shampoo and water bottles and perfume. Avoid direct contact with skin, avoid storing or heating foods in plastic containers, avoid drinking from plastic bottles, and avoid teething toys for children made of soft plastic. Also, don't forget pet chew toys that are plastic. They carry the same cautions as children's toys. Read More on Toxic Toys ...

3. Don't put anything on your skin that you wouldn't eat. That may sound odd, but we know that your skin is the largest organ in your body and it readily absorbs whatever you put on it. Once its in your system, how is that any different from the food you eat? So, lotions, soaps and shampoos should be non-toxic too. Avoid sulfates like sodium lauryl sulfate and ammonium lauryl sulfate which are low cost ingredients yet powerful irritants; likewise for petroleum based products like propylene glycol. Avoid toxic preservatives like formaldehyde and parabens, the latter of which mimics estrogen. Avoid synthetic fragrances which can also cause irritation. How safe are the products you are using? Find out here...

Read this from the Environmental Working Group:

CSI Fingerprint Toy (dangerous powder included)

Beware if your children put the CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Fingerprint Examination Kit on their holiday wish lists.

It doesn't take a sleuth to detect danger in these kits -- the fingerprinting dust contains tremolite, one of the most lethal forms of asbestos.

Even worse, children are supposed to blow on the asbestos-contaminated powder after dusting for fingerprints, which means they will likely inhale lung-damaging, cancer-causing asbestos fibers.

Ask EWG: What is "fragrance"?

Question: Is it true that the cosmetics industry can put any chemical into a product's "fragrance" without showing it on the ingredients list? What do they put in there? Get the answer... from the Environmental Working Group blog and watch the YouTube presentation.

Holiday Stress? Listen to Dr. Tom!
What You Can Do About Stress Over The Holidays

Foods:  Maximize fruits and vegetables.  Minimize proteins, grains and sugars.  Don't use "sugar-free" products--avoid aspartame {Nutrasweet or Equal} and sucralose {Splenda}.  Both are toxic...check the internet!

Drinks:  Maximize water intake, herbal teas, green and white teas.  Minimize fruit juices {too much sugar}, coffee {too much caffeine}, alcohol and sodas.  Never drink "sugar-free" sodas!

Exercise:  Maximize de-stressing exercises such as Yoga, Tai Chi, Chi-Gong, or at the very least walking in the fresh air outside after the evening meal.  These are even more important than weight lifting and aerobics because of their de-stressing qualities.

Meditate:  Now is a good time to begin meditating again--especially before family gatherings.

Shopping:  Simplify your gift giving.  Don't spend too much.  Stay away from malls if possible, especially during weekends.  Give gifts of fruit or healthy foods.  Give gift certificates.  Massages and health-related gift certificates are an excellent way to show you care.

Traffic:  Stay away from heavy traffic times whenever possible.  If it isn't possible, either stop somewhere to take a break {not in the mall--a bookstore is good}.  Choose mellow music to play in the car.  Do not listen to talk radio or the news.  In fact, if you can stay away from watching, listening to or reading the news you'd be amazed at how that can lessen your stress.

Take care of yourself!  Don't make too many commitments.  This is also a great time to see your chiropractor, acupuncturist, or massage therapist--any of which can greatly reduce your stress.  In my practice as a chiropractor, I haven't found anything better than Bio Energetic Synchronization Technique {BEST} to help people deal with stress.  To find a BEST practitioner, look under Morter.com.

All in all...slow down, take a deep breath and enjoy life.  Take time to notice the small miracles all around you.
