Why is quality sleep so important?

Normally, people experience 5 stages of sleep every night during which the brain actively repairs the body:

  • People achieve the 5 th stage, REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, only upon the uninterrupted completion of the previous stages of sleep. If people are too hot/cold, uncomfortable, stressed or medicated, sleep cycles are disrupted and REM sleep is not attained.
    • Stages 1-4 repair physical components such as bones, muscles, organs, etc.
    • Mental repair occurs in Stage 5
  • Lack of sleep, either in quantity or quality, can yield dangerous results:
    • Health concerns: weight gain, heart failure and stroke, insulin resistance, high blood pressure and depression
    • Safety concerns: driving while drowsy is as dangerous as drunk driving.
  • On the other hand, enough good-quality sleep can improve memory and insight into problem solving, reduce stress, and promote better health and well-being.
