Dog FoodYou've read the labels of the best commercial dog foods. You wonder if "Guaranteed Analysis" means that your dog will have corresponding guaranteed health benefits. If you spend more money for a better package, is the food better? Learn how dog food and natural supplements help make your dog healthier.

Canine Diet; Natural Nutrition for DogsHow to Prepare a Home-made Raw Dog Food Diet... Watch here!

You can easily and conveniently prepare a balanced raw food diet for your dog at home. Imagine! No preservatives, no additives, no “mystery meat”, no fillers, no grains. In fact, there’s nothing artificial about Gracie’s diet shown here.

Rules For Making a Balanced Raw Food Diet For DogsEvery dog is different and may have special needs. Ultimately, choosing the right raw foods, probiotics and supplements for your dog will help create better health and long-term health benefits. If your dog is eating commercial dog food, whether kibble or canned, you'll want to make a transition to raw.

Here are a few rules to follow when making the transition:

- Don't mix raw food with kibble or canned. Raw food is digested faster than commercial foods. Commercial foods may linger in the gut, ferment and make your dog feel uncomfortable.

- Don't give fresh grocery store meat to your dog. This meat is intended for people to eat cooked and may have too much bacteria for your dog.

- Don't give your dog cooked bones. Cooked bones splinter and may cause harm to your dog.

- Don't give grains like corn, wheat or rice. Also avoid simple carbohydrates such as white potatoes.

- Don't add bone meal which is high in fluoride and may cause cancer in bones.

- Do add different meats, including organ meats, fish and eggs to vary the sources of protein.

- Do add vegetables such as green beans, parsley and squash.

- Do add supplements including canine probiotics, immune support mushroom extract (Agarigold), oils.

There's more to it, of course. Watch my video and contact me for a consultation. We can customize your dog's diet and supplements to what your dog needs right now for better health.

Home-Made Raw Food Diet Offers Big Advantages  Add just a little effort to preparing a home-made raw food diet for your dog. Meals can be prepared in advance, ready to serve. You'll see:

  • Better Health… shiny coat, no “doggy smell”, cleaner teeth, no bad breath
  • Lower costs from your veterinarian... you'll go for wellness check-ups instead of crisis management!
  • Fewer chronic disease issues as your dog ages
  • Less need for medications… a big savings all around!

Even if you did not start your dog on a raw food diet, you can transition to raw food and see the health benefits.

Canine Diet For Special Needs Dogs*. . . including cancer, diabetes and allergies in pets

Health challenges may arise as your dog ages, shows signs of discomfort or serious illness, like cancer, diabetes and arthritis. Diet and good nutritional supplementation are a part of your dog's recovery and road to better health. More importantly, removing toxins first helps everything else work better. (see zeolite)

An abrupt switch to raw dog food may not be in your dog's best interest. You may have to start with cooked meat first, adding certain supplements and probiotics to support the immune system. Consult with your veterinarian to monitor your dog's health. However, as commercial dog foods often contain carbohydrates, fillers and irritants, you should see improvement in your pet's health as you make careful changes your dog needs.

Critical Care Pet Supplement List*

Add supplements to raw food or AFTER cooking if you are giving your dog cooked food:

  • Zeolite (Natural Cellular Defense) is always at the top of my list for good pet health and crisis recovery. Since zeolite is an effective detoxifier, we need to use zeolite as a primary starter for better health, especially in a health crisis. Zeolite passively moves through the bloodstream to capture heavy metals and other toxins that have accumulated in the body over years. As toxins are captured, more nutrients may be absorbed and used by the body. Zeolite makes nutrition more available for your pet.

  • Medicinal Mushrooms- effective for the immune system, cholesterol control, offsetting the effects of chemotherapy or radiation, kidney health, balancing blood sugar levels, anti-inflammatory benefits, anti-viral benefits and anti-aging properties. This special, potent mushroom blend of six medicinal mushrooms (IM6) has a complex nutritional value with more than 100 key nutrients. Our amazing mushroom product (MegaDefense) may be used as an adjunct to any diet or medical protocol, without side effects, and has been shown to be 90% effective against certain cancers. . . as effective as the most potent chemo drug.

  • Antioxidants- best to add as real food, such as blueberries, but also very effective as quality supplements. Vitamin C and E are good antioxidants, but you can also add capsules of bilberry, zeaxanthin or cranberry. The most effective source of antioxidants I use is Essential Daily Nutrients from Waiora. Just give 1/4 to 1/2 ounce twice per day with food. Learn more about EDN here.

  • Spices- Certain spices such as turmeric and ginger have profound health benefits. Turmeric has strong antioxidant properties that promote beautiful skin, as well as providing good nutrition for your skin. It helps clean and support the liver and has anti-aging and anti-cancer properties. Turmeric also has blood thinning properties, so use cautiously with certain diseases in which bleeding is a high risk. Ginger, added daily to your dog's diet may aid in natural flea control.

  • Nutritional or Brewer's Yeast- High in B Vitamins, these nutritional add-ins are a natural flea control which also support healthy blood (helping to prevent anemia) and metabolism of other nutrients. Brewer's yeast also contains chromium which assists in balancing blood sugar.

  • Probiotics- Add probiotics (good bacteria) to your dog's diet to help keep pathogens (harmful microorganisms) in check, aid digestion and nutrient absorption, and contribute to immune function.
Dogs need different probiotics than humans, so serving your dog a scoop of yogurt will have little benefit. I like Geneflora for Pets which contains the beneficial bacteria, Bacillus coagulans (Lactobacillus sporogenes), a hardy, naturally heat-resistant bacteria that are able to easily survive the stomach acid and reach the intestines where they can thrive and help to correct digestive imbalances.

  • Colostrum- Especially when your dog won't eat or has trouble digesting food, colostrum is the perfect food. Vets use colostrum for orphaned kittens and I like it for several reasons. Colostrum is easy to digest. It is a perfectly balanced food that can be used as a supplement or a stand alone nutrition while your pet isn't eating. It is a great add-in supplement to help maintain healthy teeth, bones and immune system. Be sure to select one with no added antibiotics or hormones. Colostrum from free range, grass-fed cows is best. I like the Sedona Brand Colostrum from Australia.

  • Healthy oils, essential fatty acids- Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil, flax seed oil and other sources help with so many aspects of healing. They have anti-inflammatory benefits and help regulate blood pressure, reduce arterial plaque, promote healthy skin and work with other important supplements in the body to assimilate nutrients for cell repair. Read more about other healthy oils in my blog. I have given fish oil 3 times per day in crisis. Adjust amount based on the weight of your pet.

  • Supplement support- If you're feeding a home cooked or raw food diet, adding supplements to fortify your dog's food with enzymes, minerals and vitamins, good bacteria for a healthy gut, etc, you can try this one from Nature's Logic. It's a great start but you will still want to add some of the specific supplements from the above list for critical care or in cancer crisis.

* I use all of these supplements for my dogs every day, for prevention. The action you take toward critical care may not vary that much in your choices of supplements, but rather in the quantity and frequency of dosing these supplements.

Always consult with your vet for diagnostic tests and evaluation. If you are seeking a non-medical approach to good health or a complimentary protocol to support your pet's immune system during crisis, I'm here to help.

Ginger's Diet for Canine Cancer

Ginger's special needs as an insulin dependent diabetic dog required us to look for natural foods high in protein. Prescription diets didn't work for her as they were too high in carbohydrates and made her blood sugar hard to manage. As a result, we learned to prepare home made meals that were high in protein and choose the right supplements for her overall health.

You can do what we did. Follow the outline above for a raw food diet. We added specific supplements to support Ginger's blood sugar levels and promote a healthy immune system. Though it may have been a little confusing at first, we soon learned that preparing a home made meal for Ginger was the best way for her to be healthy.

I can help you sort through the confusion. Just contact me for a free consultation.
