Ideal Weight

You may have tried to lose weight before or spent a lot of money on expensive weight loss programs only to find that losing weight didn't work or, if you lost weight, it was hard to maintain. If you fell for the weight loss myths you might want to relearn a few simple truths about weight loss and how to reach and maintain your ideal weight.

You are right to be concerned about achieving your ideal weight or helping your family stay healthy and fit. Studies show that waist size, greater than 35 inches for women or 40 inches for men, place people at higher risk for heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

Lifestyle Changes For Weight Loss

  • Choosing what to change matters.

What to Add- If you have a list of DO's and DON'Ts that feel too restrictive you might give up before you even start. Instead, make a list of new foods you'd like to try or old favorites prepared in a new way. Have you tried kale? This wonderful dark leafy green is great added to soups, smoothies, omelets and salads or even used as a wrap for fresh fish on the grill. Eaten alone, it has a subtle flavor, so go ahead a spice it up with garlic and red pepper flakes as in home-made kale chips.

What to Take Away- It's a great idea to totally eliminate sodas (including diet sodas) and to avoid sugary or salty foods. Make sure you have a favorable substitute so you don't slip into your old choices. Enjoy water with a squeeze of lemon. Go ahead and have coffee or tea, but without the cream and sugar. Use a little skim milk instead.

What to Keep- Keep single ingredient foods rather than processed combinations. For example, steak, fish and chicken are great single ingredient foods. However, battered and deep fried fish sticks, chicken nuggets or meat patties (meat with other filler ingredients) are not. Go for fresh, raw or steamed vegetables rather than vegetables in a sauce. Try fresh fruit for a sweet treat instead of ice cream or cookies. You’ll be surprised at how easy it is to eat real foods.

  • Think LIVE FOOD instead of packaged.

What's "live food"? Live food is minimally processed and as close to raw and fresh as possible. Though meat should be cooked, raw vegetables and fruits, sprouted grains and even cacao nibs have so much more nutritional value. Try using avocado as a medium to carry chocolate sweetened with a little agave for a nutritious treat.

What's wrong with packaged foods? Even if they claim to be "balanced" in nutrition, packaged foods have many mysterious ingredients- preservatives, thickeners, colors and fillers that have no nutritional value. In fact, packaged food also sustains bad habits of eating foods that are not live. It's far better to learn to eat right from the beginning rather than to relearn how to eat nutritious foods.

  • Cleanse

Toxic chemicals collect in fat cells. These are chemicals such as heavy metals and pesticides, plastics and artificial ingredients. Since your body may not be able to process these toxins, they become stored in soft tissue, soft organs, brain, joints, bone marrow and fat cells.

Your digestive system holds on to solid waste that can build up in your colon. Allow your natural clean system to absorb nutrition more effectively. Use natural fiber and natural herbal cleansing for a few days. Try detox or cleanse teas to support healthy liver and digestion.

  • Flood the Body With Concentrated Liquid Nutrients

Certain supplements, high in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals help you feel energized, satisfied and, more importantly, not deprived. You'll sleep better and have the benefits of age-defying nutrients which also support heart health, joint health and mental acuity. In fact, supplementing with the right nutrients can make or break a diet plan.

  • Make Time For Self-Care

In this case, it's ok to be "selfish". Self care means you're looking out for your health in all aspects; mental, physical and emotional health. If you fall apart, who will be there to care for the rest of the family? Who will be there for you? Self care means taking time for sleep, meditation and exercise. Self care means stopping to take a breath and not always answer the phone or text. Self care means that you prioritize yourself with good health in mind. Self care becomes a habit that is easily taught and respected. Self care is a gift that lets others know you're good and you'll be there for them too.
